Why consider staying at one of their exclusive hotels?
The Royal Portfolio collection boasts a handful of very different and spectacular establishments. Three properties we feel are worth noting, that truly stand out from the crowd, La Residence Hotel in the picturesque Cape Winelands, Birkenhead House perched on the rugged cliffs of Hermanus and the Royal Malewane Lodge in the Thornybush Private Reserve
We thought we would share a few thoughts as to why we absolutely recommend that travelers experience at least one of these properties during their stay (for those who are looking for more than just comfort) as they really do offer some of the most luxurious experiences that one could possibly have in South Africa.

La Residence Hotel offers a breathtaking Cape Winelands experience in the most exquisite vineyard surrounds. The hotels 11 individually themed suites embrace vibrant colors, luxurious tapestries and paintings from local and international artists including a collection of hand-carved four-poster beds from Lamu, a large number of fascinating antiques, as well as a suite commissioned exclusively for Elton John. Combined with the beauty of the hotel’s grounds and surrounding winelands scenery, La Residence really has the ability to transport you to another place!
Birkenhead House in Hermanus is about utter relaxation and seaside serenity! Located on the cliffs and pathways of Walker Bay, this property has many times been described as fit to host a monarch (Will and Kate do I hear you calling?) A glass-fronted lounge invites the ocean inside, setting the perfect scene for an afternoon gin and tonic, while precious ornaments and crystal chandeliers catch the sun’s rays as it sets on the horizon. No surprises that the rooms are again, are so beautiful and you really do have a hard time selecting which one you want to stay in (my favorite is a Ralph Lauren inspired sea facing room with an antique chair done in a golden cashew silk – the chair being a signature touch that the owner Liz uses in all of her properties bathrooms).
The Royal Malewane lodge located in the Thornybush Private Reserve is a safari experience that we feel is as close to perfect as it gets. Think outdoor Persian rugs and private plunge pool pools (that elephant often drink from), countless personal touches and thought behind almost everything, dining opportunities for anything that a guest’s imagination can conjure up, whether it be Guinness beer specially flown in for an Irish family who are watching a football final from their private villa, or a private candle lit romantic dinner and wine tasting for two on your suite deck under the stars, heaven for honeymooners! I have actually heard of travelers who have cried tears upon their departure – it is that good!
If you can include one, or a combination of these three exclusive hotels into your South Africa itinerary, you will surely know what it is like to live like royalty.
